Product Care
NATURE OF GOODS
VIETRI’s products are handmade by skilled artisans using centuries-old techniques and classic Italian design. With those heritage-inspired ideals, VIETRI marries ever-evolving technology and an uncompromising commitment to quality. Each handcrafted product is an authentic and unique work of craftsmanship. As such, its nuances are to be expected and treasured. Please refer to each product's care card for in-depth information about how to care for it.
DINNERWARE MATERIALS & CARE
VIETRI tableware and home and garden accessories are handmade and handpainted in a variety of Italian clays. For years of enjoyment, please treat all products with care.
Stoneware is stoneware clay fired at extremely high temperatures, resulting in a vitrified product that is impermeable and less porous, elevating the strength and durability. Italian Stoneware is a mix of different clays including a stoneware clay that can be fired at higher temperatures and provides added strength to the product. All Stoneware and Italian Stoneware collections are dishwasher, microwave, freezer, and oven safe and highly resistant to chipping. Stoneware collections are HORECA approved.
All earthenware (Terra Bianca, Terra Cotta, and Terra Marrone) collections are dishwasher safe and most are microwave safe. Some may be placed in the freezer and oven - if noted on the piece. We recommend using the low energy/air dry cycle and not overloading the dishwasher. Please use a mild, non-abrasive, non-fragrant/non-citrus dishwashing detergent.
+ Terra Bianca - A white earthenware clay that is often used for handpainted designs as it provides the ideal canvas for storytelling, allowing colors to truly come to life.
+ Terra Cotta - A red clay that is traditionally the most commonly used. The properties tend to best showcase depth, saturation, and richness of colors.
+ Terra Marrone - A dark brown/black clay that is among the strongest earthenware clays available. It has traditionally been used in Italy for making outdoor sculptures and wall art for churches.
Melamine - Lightweight yet sturdy with a glossy finish, our 100% melamine is BPA free and ideal for outdoor use or meals with children. Melamine is dishwasher safe, food safe, chip resistant, and HORECA approved. Melamine is NOT microwave safe.
Handwashing is recommended for decorative and oversized accessories.
Crazing - Over time, crazing - the formation of miniscule lines in the glaze - may occur on ceramics. This contributes to the unique visual quality of Italian clays and does not affect the durability or safety of the product. Since earthenware is porous, it expands and contracts with extreme heat and cold.
All dinnerware and serving accessories meet FDA and Prop 65 requirements, except when noted otherwise.
DISHWASHER USE
Dishwasher Safe - We recommend using a non-fragrant/non-citrus, non-abrasive detergent on the air dry cycle (or econo heat when available). It is recommended to place the dishes so they avoid touching during the high pressure dishwashing and as such we recommend you do not overload the dishwasher. All dishes should be dried thoroughly before being stored.
Dishwasher Safe (Melamine) - Top rack only. We recommend using a non-fragrant/non-citrus, non-abrasive detergent on the air dry cycle (or econo heat when available). It is recommended to place the dishes so they avoid touching during the high pressure dishwashing and as such we recommend you do not overload the dishwasher. All dishes should be dried thoroughly before being stored.
Dishwasher Safe (Flatware) - VIETRI flatware is made of the highest quality 18/10 stainless steel. Stainless steel is not stain proof. Ingredients found in tea, coffee, salad dressing, vinegar, and salt can cause discoloration. Pitting or spotting is usually caused by hard water or foods with high salt content.
+ Use the low energy/air dry cycle with the handles placed up in the basket and a mild, non-abrasive, non-citrus detergent without chlorine, alcohol, or perfumes. Knives should be placed in a separate basket.
+ If cleaning by hand, use a plastic or stainless pan (never aluminum), dish soap, and warm water.
+ Whether you clean your flatware by hand or in a dishwasher, dry it thoroughly, right away. Air drying will often leave spots and streaks.
+ In hard water areas, use a water-softening agent to avoid spotting or pitting.
MICROWAVE USE
All Italian stoneware and stoneware collections and most earthenware collections are microwave safe when noted. The temperature of VIETRI pieces may vary after microwave use due to the handmade nature of quality, natural clays. Thus, as with all products used in a microwave, we recommend the following precautions:
+ Use microwave for reheating purposes only.
+ Do not permit children to handle any product that has been heated in a microwave.
+ Do not put any products into a microwave without food or liquid on or inside the piece.
+ Allow item to cool before taking it out of the microwave.
+ Use a pot holder or oven mitt when handling the product as item may get hot.
OVEN-TO-TABLE SERVERS
VIETRI’s casserole and baking dishes can be used in most conventional ovens and dishwashers. They are handcrafted of very dense clays and fired at extremely high temperatures, making them heat resistant to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (with the exception of Aurora, Incanto Stone, and Forma, which are heat resistant up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit). It is important that baking and casserole pieces in our Old St. Nick collection be cured. Terra marrone collections such as Incanto, stoneware, and Italian stoneware collections do not require curing.
To cure, fully submerge and soak piece in water for 15 minutes. This soaking prepares the dish, reduces cooking time, and prevents the food from sticking. The handles of these pieces are decorative and should not be used for support. Do not use casserole lids in the oven, unless otherwise noted. Hot casseroles and baking dishes should never be placed on cool, damp, or unprotected surfaces.
VIETRI bakeware should never be taken directly from the refrigerator to the oven due to the extreme temperature change, nor should it be placed directly from oven to freezer. The handles of these pieces are decorative and should not be used for support with the exception of our Italian Bakers collection. Please remove the bakeware from the oven by holding the body of the dish, supporting the base.
GLASSWARE
VIETRI seeks durability, as well as artistry, in selecting glass drinkware, dinnerware, and decorative accessories. Not all glassware collections are dishwasher safe. Please reference product care details on VIETRI.com, or in your catalog or price book. To help prevent clouding of glass that is dishwasher safe, refrain from harsh detergents and use the low energy/air dry cycle of the dishwasher or wash by hand. Do not place glass in the freezer.
Polycarbonate Drinkware is made of a high-grade polycarbonate, making it exceptionally durable and shatterproof while being 100% recyclable. Polycarbonate is BPA free, Dishwasher and Microwave Safe, and HORECA approved.
FLATWARE
VIETRI flatware is made of the highest quality 18/10 stainless steel. The 18/10 combination is the highest quality alloy (metal mixture) available for making stainless steel flatware and includes 18% chrome for maximum corrosion resistance and 10% nickel for a silver-like luster. Stainless steel is not stain proof. Ingredients found in tea, coffee, salad dressing, vinegar, and salt can cause discoloration. Pitting or spotting is usually caused by hard water or foods with high salt content. VIETRI Flatware is dishwasher safe, unless otherwise noted.
+ Use the low energy/air dry cycle with the handles placed up in the basket and a mild, non-abrasive/non-citrus detergent without chlorine, alcohol, or perfumes.
+ Immediately after use, rinse to remove potentially corrosive particles from flatware. Flatware should not be allowed to sit in water for days.
INDOOR/OUTDOOR HOME ACCESSORIES
VIETRI ceramic accessories make strikingly attractive containers for plants, flowers, and serving accessories.
For indoor pieces that hold water, we recommend always using a liner or platter underneath to protect surfaces from moisture and scratches, as well as not placing liquid in these pieces for an extended period of time. While they are perfectly safe for drinking purposes, if liquid is left directly in the vessel for a long time it could seep out of the bottom causing damage to the surface. We recommend adding a separate vessel or using Oasis Floral Foam when making arrangements.
For Planters and Cachepots, we recommend bringing these inside during winter months as freezing water or freezing temperatures may cause cracks. Our Rustic Garden collection cannot withstand freezing outdoor temperatures.
+ Cachepot: Please do not put water directly into a cachepot and instead remove the potted plant and let drain completely before returning to the cachepot.
+ Planters: Featuring a drainage hole, they’re ideal for planting directly with ease.
LINENS
VIETRI features linens of varying materials and care.
+ Spunlace: a fabric made from fibers like polyester, cellulose, polypropylene, nylon, viscose, or cotton (e.g., Papersoft: 70% cellulose pulp, 30% polyester). Using water jets, the spunlace process entangles the fibers without chemicals, giving it a luxurious, fabric-like texture that sets it apart from competitors. These linens are disposable. Bianco is 100% biodegradable.
+ Polyester, Cotton, and Acrylic Blend: These pieces consist of a blend of polyester, cotton, and acrylic fibers. For care: Machine wash up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Lay flat to dry, warm iron.
+ 100% Cotton: Machine wash up to 140°F. Lay flat to dry, warm iron. Do not dry clean.
+ 100% Linen with Acrylic Coating: For serious stains, pieces can be machine washed up to 100°F. Lay flat to dry, warm iron.
