Dishwasher safe - We recommend using a non-citrus, non-abrasive detergent on the air dry cycle and not overloading the dishwasher. Hand washing is recommended for oversized items.
Microwave safe - The temperature of handmade, natural clay items may vary after microwave use. We recommend allowing items to cool before taking them out of the microwave or using an oven mitt.
Terra Cotta Earthenware - VIETRI uses natural earthenware clay that is indigenous to Italy. It is the most durable earthenware of the highest quality on the market today, using the best glazes and firing at the highest temperatures. With earthenware clay, we are able to get variations in color and glaze, for which VIETRI is famous, that bring warmth and uniqueness to our products.
A region in central Italy, Tuscany is known for its landscapes, history, craftsmanship, and influence on culture. The birthplace of the Renaissance, Tuscany is often called the art palace of Italy, and many of the world's greatest works of art come from the region. Ceramics have a long legacy in the area and maintain their place of importance in the region today.
This collection comes to us from a workshop outside of Florence. The inspiration for its organic shapes came easily, drawn from an ancient technique. In the 1300's, Italian peasants used unrefined glazes on their hand-thrown pottery that separated during firing, exposing the terra cotta edges of the pieces. The result was a collection of rustic shapes with exposed deckled edges. Today, Tuscan artisans recreate this look today by using a wax glaze to expose the terra cotta edges, as well as by continuing the tradition of hand-molding the ceramics.
